Graece βαυκάλις, cognomen Alexandri cuiusdam Presbyteri, apud Philostorgium l. 1. c. 4. sic dicta διὰ τὸ σαρκὸς ὑπερτραφοῦς ὄγκου ὑπὸ τῶ μεταφρένων αὐτοῦ σεσωρευμένον, ἄγτους ὁςτρακίνου ἐκμιμεῖςθαι χῆμα, ἅπερ οὖν Βαυκάλας ἐπιχωρίως Α᾿λεξανδρεῖς εἰώθασιν ὀνομάζειν, Propter carnis videlicet, quae supercreverat in dorso eius, molem collectam ad medum et imitationem vasis testacei, quod Alexandrini vernaculâ voce Baucalas appellare solent. Nempe Baucalis, Alexandrinorum et Aegyptiorum vox, a Bauca, orta, vas fuit fictile, alias Gillo, ut habetur in Glossa Camberon.
